12 Days of Christmas!

We changed the song 12 Days of Christmas by thinking

about how many syllables were in each line to make our

own kiwi version. This is what Mikayla came up with..

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me

Twelve  Baubles Swinging

Eleven Sparkling Pine Trees

 Ten Sunblocked Faces

Nine  Melting Ice Creams

Eight Jandals Flopping

Seven Blue Kites Flying

Six  Family Photos

Five  Memories

Four Pavlovas

Three  Water Fights

Two Candy Canes

And children splashing in the swimming pool!

I think these pictures are rather cute; email if you would like me to send you a copy of your one :)

Descriptive Writing

"Do I look alright?" said Zebi peering into the diamond encrusted mirror. Zebi waltzed in to the ball room. With his black valvet cap he skated across the clean polished floor.

Paper Pots

Yesterday we decided to put the paper that we made on Paper Day to good use! We made little containers that we will hopefully use to plant seedlings in.

First of all we wet the paper to make it soft so it would be easier to bend.

Next we wrapped it around a wooden roller and folded the bottom up and pressed it together so it would stay in that shape.

Now we just have to wait for them to dry....

What things worked well? What didn't work so well?

Popcorn Explanation Writing!

We wrote explanations all about how popcorn pops! We then made Popcorn Boxes during Geometry as we are learning about the nets used to make different shapes.

Take it away Adam...

How Popcorn Pops?

Mmmm! Popcorn, so you want to learn about the history and how popcorn pops?
Well the Native Americans believed that a spirit lived inside each kernel. When the popcorn was heated to the right temperature the spirit would burst out of the kernel into air as the steam.

A kernel has four parts to it, the Tip Cap, the Germ, the Endosperm and the Pericarp (or hull). Popcorn is a type of maize, or corn and is a member of the grass family. Popcorn is the only corn that will pop.

Popcorn pops because it has 13.5-14% moisture which turns into steam, when it gets around 212 degress. When it is 347 degress, pressure from the steam will suddenly burst the hull open at amazing speed.

Popcorn tastes good with butter and salt, and maybe try it with some sugar, but please keep away from children under 3 because they might chook. So there we have it how popcorn pops.

Value of the Week

Excellence is not a skill, it is an attitude.

Excellence is doing something ordinary, but doing it exceptionally well.

Ask yourself, "Have I got the right attitude to achieve excellence?"

Creativity!

How are we going to be creative this week Kahikatea 7????

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day: A time for people special to us to come in and see what we do in our class. We enjoyed making heart baskets and sharing our work with them. (Sorry the pictures are upside down!!)

Wednesday 30 October 2013

The value of the week is ENTHUSIASM! Which means cheering people on, being 'dead keen' and being excited to do something. We also thought it meant to do things with a smile on your face, even if it is not what you feel like doing.
Room 7 is always enthusiastic about music with Mrs Hampton every Wednesday afternoon. Today we learnt Jingle Bells on the the marimba, keyboard and glockenspiel's.

At what other times can we show enthusiasm???

Monday 21 October 2013

We have noticed that our Brassica plants have really shot up in the last few weeks! We still are not really sure what type of plants they are, but we hope they will grow some type of vegetable soon! Before you say we need to do some weeding, the little plants around them are mustard plants!

In class we have been talking about sustainability. Why do you think growing our own vegetables would be a sustainable way of living??

Lets write together!

Since we have been learning all about narrative stories, I thought we could write a fun narrative together here on our class blog. I will start off with a story starter, then you can carry it on by adding a sentence or two.

Things to think about:
- Does your sentence make sense?
- Have you included description and detail?
- Have you checked that the spelling and punctuation is all correct?
Don't forget to come back and have a read again one day soon; who knows what twists the story will take!

So lets get started!

The fire had completely burnt out during the night. It was so cold that I woke up shivering and sniffling.  I could hear Dad's loud  snoring, so I knew he was still sleeping soundly."I'll get the wood for Mum" I thought, and I slipped on my shoes to go outside. I barely had the door open when I saw her looking right at me. . . .

Last Thursday was our school cross country. It was a freezing cold day, but by judging all the smiles I recieved while standing by the far goal post, it really looked like every one was themselves! Keep training hard for the Interschool Cross Country which is happening next Thursday :)

The Value of the Week is: Tolerance
What does tolerance mean to you? How do you show this in class, in the playground and at home??

Friday 30 August 2013

Last night was the Matamata District Digi Awards at the Intermediate in town! It was a great night and we saw all the finalist enteries from all the other schools. Hinuera School was well represented with quite a handful of our classmates making the finals! In our eyes, Ava was the star of the night and won the award for Best Photo Story in the Year 4-6 category! Well done to Ava, and to the others that got involved! No doubt we are all looking forward to next years Digi Awards now that we all
know what to expect :)

Ava's winning Photo Story
Check out the bubbles we made in Kahikatea 7! They were lots of fun as we were able to make such big bubbles using our hands! Don't forget to read the descriptive sentences below :)

They were shimmering as they danced in the sky- Caitlyn

The mixture swirled and twirled around my fingers. I took my hands out and blew softly. The bubble looked like a dancing rainbow- Ava

The bubbles hovered above the trees and were gliding over the grass –Le Roy

I blew very gently and then the bubble squeezed out. It slowly drifted away until ‘pop!’ it disappeared like it was never there- Marlene

A gentle breeze sweeps the bubbles away as softly as a caring hand- William

The bubble mysteriously disappeared like it was never there- Mikayla

I produced a bubble, silvery as my granny’s hair, shiny as fish scales, colourful like a rainbow, wet like a frog and as big as Jupiter - Jessica

They vanished into the air like they were a ghost- Khan

The bubbles were like microscopic rainbows. I touched one and it felt oily, slick, light and greasy, then it went pop! –Samual

Jadon blew the biggest bubble you can ever imagine. It’s like there is an imaginary bubble machine- Leo

Thursday 15 August 2013

Earlier in the week, we were talking about the things that make our class a neat and special place to learn. Gemma said that K7 is special because we can have fun in our class and it is easy to work with each other.  Someone agreed with that and added that it is because we all co-operate with one another and treat each other with respect. We also decided that it is because we often think about our class treaty and the rules that help make our class work well.  Jadon then said we know all the routines and they are effective to help our class run each day.

Why do you think it is important for us to continue to build on these things? What other things can we do to make K7 a great place to learn?

Room 7 did some wonderful descriptive writing today!

First of all we created our 'Wild Self' on this super cool website (If your lucky I might add it to the blog!) and then we had to describe it, using adjectives and similes. This is the one Sarah did.

The Strange Creature-

The strange but unique creature is very different to people. She is called the  Cob-fen- wal-octo-tarantula. For legs she has 8 long hairy spider legs and for arms she has long navy blue octopus tentacles, which are as sticky as glue. She has long, sharp and pointy fangs like a Sabeur Tooth  tiger. If you look at her you will notice that she has big fox like ears, all hairy in the inside. To protect her from the sun, she has a cobra snake hood covered in red scales. She has big puppy dog eyes. The only thing that is normal about her is her orange plated hair......

Thank you for letting us share your work Sarah. Maybe some of you others might like to post a comment with a sentence that you did and were really proud of. I know we would all like to read them! :)

Wednesday 10 July 2013

Well done to those who got up and presented speeches at the school speech finals on Monday! It was a neat opportunity to share your ideas and persuade everyone to agree with your opinion. There were some well thought out arguements so well done for getting involved.

On Friday 5th July it was Book Character Day. Everyone got dressed up and turned into someone from their favourite book! What different book characters can you spot in Kahikatea 7?
